A Wedding, A Retirement, and A Glimmer of Hope

A Wedding, A Retirement, and A Glimmer of Hope

Those who follow our newsletters have been tracking the craziness in our life recently. But it’s a “good crazy”, and each step brings us closer to Karuizawa. A Wedding.  My son, John David, Jr. married the beautiful Tori Michalec in January.  It was such a wonderful celebration, and we got to reunite with many great friends whom we had not seen in years.  We wish David & Tori our love and prayers for many happy years ahead.  We are glad…

We Have A House!

We Have A House!

We received exciting news this week when our friends at TEAM Japan in Tokyo confirmed availability of a home for us in Karuizawa.  This had been up in the air recently, and we had been eagerly awaiting to learn where we would live.  There is a specific home within the Karuizawa Retreat Center (KRC) compound designated for the camp host, but it is scheduled for renovation next year and will not be available. The KRC administrators have arranged for an…

Ministry By The Numbers

Ministry By The Numbers

Dear friends, All the numbers are adding up towards our ministry in Japan… 31 — The date I have announced for my retirement: January 31, 2018. 6 — The number of paychecks remaining until my professional career comes to a close. I can’t explain how scary this feels; like jumping into murky waters from a high cliff; you don’t know if the water is deep enough to cushion the fall. 37 — The number of years I have dedicated to serving our country and…

Small Steps

Small Steps

Mother Theresa once said: “We cannot all do great things.  But we can do small things with great love.” This has given me encouragement in the past when, despite my best efforts towards service and outreach, I fail to see any tangible results.  I realize in those times that giving our best efforts for God, with a good heart and pure intentions, fulfills God’s calling for us to love our neighbors as ourselves.  And whether or not we see results,…

Calming the Storm

Calming the Storm

After a 2-week business trip to Singapore & Guam, I (John) have returned back to Hawaii.  As much as I enjoy travel, it’s just no fun without Pen & Mele coming along.  I hope & think this is my last trip as my projects and duties at work are taken over by colleagues.  This photo shows the “Welcome Home” moment from Mele — she was so excited that I was coming home that she skipped her nap, then passed out on…

A Long Separation

A Long Separation

Today, I (John) will be flying to Singapore for a conference on the Maritime Security Initiative with ASEAN member-nations in Southeast Asia.  This is just one additional job that got added to my plate recently on top of my “normal” duties at work. At the last minute, another stop was added in Guam to help oversee the modernization & consolidation of data centers, data networks, and  other IT facilities in that important region.  In total, I’ll be gone for two…

A big day for us

A big day for us

Today was a big day for us at church as we were officially presented to the congregation of West Oahu Christian Church (WOCC) as the next missionary family they will send into the field. We received a very gracious introduction by Roberta, the head of the WOCC Missions Committee, where she told an amazing story.  WOCC has close ties to Japan, and we even hold Japanese-language services for our Japanese-speaking members.  Roberta had been feeling discouraged that the church currently does not…

Our Ministry is Launched

Our Ministry is Launched

Aloha friends.  “Ohana” means “family” in Hawaiian, and you are part of our extended ohana. Our Love for Japan Both of us have always had a great affinity for the people of Japan.  I (John) lived in Japan twice while in the Navy.  Pen minored in Japanese in college and always dreamed of living there.  To our delight, we were given the honor of serving Marines and their families at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni Japan from 2009…
