The Letaw Family

The Letaw Family

Aloha!  We are John and Pen Letaw, and our little girl Mele.  Our daughter’s name (pronounced MAY-lay) is the Hawaiian word for the song, dance and poetry of the islands.

In April 2018, we will move to Karuizawa in the Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture, Japan.  Once there, we will serve as host and manager of Karuizawa Retreat Center (KRC) while studying Japanese and participating in Christian outreach in the surrounding area.  We are aligned with TEAM, a global alliance of churches and missionaries.

We met in Bangkok in 2007 where John was serving in a Christian youth ministry and got married a year later.  We later served in Japan for three years, overseeing the chapel youth program at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, then came to Hawaii in 2012 where Mele was born.  We have laid down strong roots here, but now are feeling called to return to the mission field in Japan.  While we greet this with joyful anticipation, it is hard to leave the extended family who have embraced us on Oahu.  Each time we move, it is a wrenching and emotional experience.

This site will document our journey as we prepare to return to Japan.  We will provide details of our mission as God reveals it to us and we hope that you will follow along with our story.  We invite you to share this adventure with us by signing up for our newsletter at the right-side margin of this page.  Mahalo!
